Australian Football League, (aka AFL or Aussie Rules) is an iconic part of this country's identity, the Sydney Swans, originally the Victorian South Melbourne Club team brought the game to Sydney fans in the 1980's being the first team to play for another State outside Victoria.
They won their first premiership as the Sydney Swans in 2005 and have been in the Grand Final more times than any other club, (other than Geelong) in the League. If you haven't experienced the exciting game of Aussie Rules, then the Sydney Cricket Ground is one of the best places to enjoy the spectacle because you are so close to the action and when there's over 40,000 fans roaring you can't help but get involved in the crowd antics.
Or if it's Rugby League, then the National Rugby League (aka NRL) is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports in Australia. Since the game was first formed in 1895 in the North of England, it has slowly grown in international popularity. Today, NRL is one of Australia’s most watched sports, with the NRL Grand Final being one of the country’s most popular sporting events of the year and one of the largest attended sporting championship games in the world.
There is no better place to enjoy NRL than when it is hosted at our beloved Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), while waiting for our new state of the art Sydney Football Stadium to be built. Located in Moore Park, it is the closest sporting facility to Sydney's CBD.
The SCG is Sydney’s second largest stadium that offers an impressive seating capacity of forty eight thousand. This treasured venue has a sacred relationship with many Rugby League - hosting its first game in 1911 and having hosted more top-level premiership rugby league games than any other grounds.
In addition to NRL games, the SCG has also hosted major international sporting events, including the 1968 Rugby League World Cup Final and is home to the Australian national cricket team, NSW cricket team, the Sydney Swans and the Sydney Sixers. You can view the schedule of all sporting events at the SCG here.
