The ideal day in Potts Point, Sydney

Now let’s be honest, 24 hours is not enough time to get under the surface of a city, so location is key. You’ll be pleased to know we have you covered at any of our Sydney City properties, perfectly nestled in the trendy area of Potts Point.

What you may remember as dark and seedy alleyways in Kings Cross have spawned into delicious and vibrant avenues, providing endless food and drink possibilities. So to help you out, we thought we would fill you in on our perfect day in the area.

6 AM:

So much to do, so little time. I set my alarm for 6 am, feeling motivated to get in a full day of action. As the alarm reliably sets off in the morning I soon realise 6 am was highly ambitious. I hit the snooze button and go back to sleep. Don’t judge me – I’m on holidays.

8 AM: Coffee and Breakfast at Springfield's  or steps to Llankelly Place - coffee meca

Enjoy breakfast on the verandah at Anatel at the front of Springfield. Or walk up the steps to Llankelly Place - a delicious laneway and only a few minutes walk from your front door, get your day started right with a trip to any of these pint-sized local cafés dotted along here. There's Joseph Hyde with its coffee brewed by local roasters and pancakes, where you can start your day off strong with the Croque and Jack - a croque madame toasted sandwich made with jalapeno-Monterey Jack cheese, smoked ham and a duck egg on sourdough - yum. Sit outside and take in the fresh morning air. It’s the perfect start to your day.

9 AM: Stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens

Sydney is known for its beautiful harbourside sights. Lucky for you, you’re just a 5 minute drive or 12 minute walk to the Royal Botanic Gardens - gateway to the sites of the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, Circular Quay or the Gallery of NSW Art Gallery. There are always events on at the Royal Botanic Gardens so be sure to see what’s happening. The Aboriginal Heritage Tour, where you can learn about the Cadigal people, plant uses, culture and taste some bush food.

Stroll down to the magnificent Mrs Macquarie’s Chair where you’ll want to take an awesome selfie in front of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Walk along the promenade all the way to the Opera House or past it to The Rocks area – it’s worth it!  Then wander back via the NSW Art Gallery for a current exhibition or original artworks that are housed here.  Once you’ve had enough of nature or culture, head back around to Woolloomooloo Bay for lunch or up the Butler stairs for a gorgeous lunch at The Butler.

1 PM: Lunch Time at The Butler or La Bomba

Come back to Potts Point to avoid the city throng and bustling harbour and treat yourself to a nice lunch – you deserve it after all that walking around.

2.30 PM: Afternoon walk around Rushcutter's Bay to Redleaf for a swim or a designer shopping stop in the hub of Double Bay

Head out to Rushcutter's Bay and walk around the luxury marina's up over the hill, down the Marathon Stairs to the swanky designer set of Double Bay.

If you're keen for a harbour swim, follow the coastal Manly to Bondi Walk for a harbour swim - look out for the yellow signs painted on the footpath and street signs to a favourite after work and weekend local harbour swimming pool locally known as Redleaf (after the beautiful trees in the area and recently re-named the Murray Rose Pool in honour of an Australian Olympic swimmer in the 1950's).   Take note of the fun street art along the way and inside the cafe at the pool.

Or wander the local shops of stunning Macleay Street the main road of Potts Point. Follow it down from the Potts Point Hotel down past Challis Ave to the Yellow House, historic 1960's art gallery and vegetarian cafe.  You wont be able to resist popping in to see the eclectic array of local fashion boutiques, tea shops, homewares, deli's, galleries, bookshops and art deco specialists. You are sure to pick up a little treasure to remember your visit.

6.00 PM:  OH MY GOD It’s time to eat again. La Bomba followed by Apollo or Fratelli Paradiso,

If you feel like spreading your eating time out over a few hours, start off at La Bomba (our local cafe just 3 doors up from our Challis property) or settle in at The Apollo and have a cocktail at the bar. This place gets super busy and they don’t take bookings for less than 6 people so you need to get in nice and early. After your drinks, let the inner Greek in you out. Order the Full Greek – it’s good value and transports your taste buds to Greece in a modern setting. Oh, and it’s just a few-minute-walk from the Hotel.

If you’ve had enough European food for one day, head to the trendy Cho Cho San just across from Apollo for Japanese like you’ve never had it. Take a seat at the famous and perennially changing Fratelli Paradiso – literally opposite Hotel Challis. It’s blackboard specials are a go to, quickly eroding any doubts like “if it’s so special, why isn’t it on the menu?” At Fratelli, all the meals are special. It’s the perfect meal before an afternoon of relaxation as you gear up for the evening.

9 PM: Drinks at Dulcies, the Roosevelt or Jaggling Jacks

Drop into our friends for a bit of Misbehaving at Dulcies for some uniquely Australian made spirits and cocktails with Live Entertainment.  We've partnered with Dulcie's to bring you a special taste of Australia - Try the Best of Australian Spirits Tasting Paddle or book in for their speciality Cocktail Making classes, both offered exclusively to our Sydney Lodges Guests.

Or slip back in time to the Roosevelt that Teddy would love if he were still alive.  We base that on nothing but what we do know is you need to go there for their Martini and Manhattan style boozing after your epic feed. What goes on behind the bar is pure wizardry, with the potions used to make the liquid nitrogen Martini the go-to beverage.  The history alone of this place will be awe-inspiring from it's hey day of international stars, like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jnr to its later underground notoriety.

1 AM: Sleep in Jaw-Dropping Comfort

Time to crash, and what better way to do it than stumbling into your luxurious bed. These beds are seriously comfy and the sheets provide the comfort a pokies table does to a gambler, or a mother does to her newborn. Sleep well, you deserve it – and see you again soon!
