Celebrate the Lunar New Year at Sydney Lunar Festival, produced by the City of Sydney. This vibrant arts festival has a program bursting with cultural events, markets, tours, exhibitions and entertainment, most of them free. 2020 will be the Year of the Rat. Don't miss these 3 iconic events :
LUNAR LANES IN HAYMARKET - 25 January from 5 pm to 10 pm
Not to be missed, Lunar Lanes is the launch event of the Sydney Lunar Festival 2020. This new event will transform the bustling laneways of Haymarket into an exciting street party with real community spirit on Lunar New Year’s Day.
Visit one of the many famed restaurants of Chinatown for a celebratory feast or grab a festival-friendly snack from a variety of on-site food trucks or market stalls.
From 8.30pm, the electrifying LED lion dancers take their dynamic performance to the streets. A colourful, 10m long, luminous, LED dragon is a sight to behold as it twists and sweeps its way through the festivities.
LUNAR LANTERN EXHIBITION - 31 January to 9 February
Take a short stroll around Circular Quay from Sydney Opera House to The Rocks to discover 12 larger-than-life animal signs of the Lunar zodiac.
The Lunar Lanterns are a creative, contemporary interpretation of a centuries-old tradition. Bring the whole family and get up close to these magnificent giant artworks.
DRAGON BOAT RACES - 1st and 2nd February
Don't miss the extremely popular Dragon Boat Races in Darling Harbour, the largest race of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, that see the spirit and power of the dragon come alive as 12 metre long boats, with up to 20 paddlers, battle it out to the beating of drums!
Originating in the rivers of Southern China as a way to encourage prosperous rains, today dragon boat racing has evolved into a fast paced water sport with a passionate following. Feel your heart race in time with the on-board drummers as the fierce dragons slice through the water.
