Randwick Ritz Cinema

When it comes to an easy and relaxing day or night out, it is hard to beat the joys of going to the cinema – the promise of a good film, the comfort of a cushiony theatre chair and the smell of fresh popcorn in the air – and what better place to make your outing extra special than venturing to the Ritz Cinema in Randwick.

Located on St Paul’s Street, the Randwick Ritz is one of only two original Art Deco cinemas remaining in Sydney (the other located in Cremorne); showcasing films from the latest blockbusters to all-time classics and everything in between.

The History of Randwick Ritz

Built in 1937 and currently Heritage listed, every nook and cranny of the Ritz Cinema is steeped in rich history and tradition. As the last known surviving theatre designed by Aaron M. Bolot, the Ritz is a rare survivor of the cinema culture of the 1930s. This family owned and independent cinema has seen it all – over its 80 plus year history – and is still thriving today. It is a beloved landmark of the city and a long-standing institution embedded in the very fabric of the Randwick neighbourhood.

With an additional three theatres added to the original site in 1997 and a further two theatres added in 2001, the Ritz boasts an impressive seating capacity of 900. For even more glamour, it has been home to the Australian Film Walk of Fame since 2008, with the installation of plaques outside the Ritz, honoring members of the Australian film industry. Blending the modern cinematic experience with touches of the past, it is easy to see how the Ritz Cinema has accumulated a strong and loyal base of local audience and continues to attract and intrigue visitors.

As one of the largest permanent cinema auditoriums left in Sydney, you truly cannot go past the Ritz for a magnificent movie-going experience that will transport you back to the golden age of cinema.

Movie Events

Discover their eclectic range of retro and cult movie events  from Italian movie festivals to surfing cult movies plus all the new releases. Plus they often hold red carpet nights with Premiere’s of some unique Australian made films and doco’s to see and be seen.  Or enjoy a drink from the balcony overlooking The Spot – a great place to meet up with friends before or after the show.

Pre-Theatre Dinner

Currently the Ritz partner with one of our Stay local restaurants, that we partner with, Del Punto.  They offer a variety of tapas with a jug of Sangria as a pre-movie dinner special – see and book here.

Ritz Laneway Cinema (Summer Season Only)

After a successful launch in Summer 2019-20, the Ritz Laneway Cinema has returned for another season. As an added twist to the ever popular open-air cinemas, the Laneway Cinema is an additional offering to the Ritz’s usual indoor viewings.

Running on selected nights after sundown, enjoy the quirky floor and wall murals, sparkling fairy lights and romantic moonlight, as the backdrop to your film. Coupled with a dedicated snack bar, blankets and audio headsets, this little laneway really has it all for a unique and exciting movie-viewing experience.

So whether you are a fan of the indoors or outdoors, venture no further than the Randwick Ritz, for all your movie pleasures.
