Art Gallery of NSW
The Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) opened in 1874 to promote art through exhibitions, lectures and art classes. Exhibitions in the gallery change frequently and there are numerous pop-up exhibitions throughout the year. General admission to the Gallery, most exhibitions and guided tours are free where passionate volunteers take you through the main gallery or individual exhibitions.
One of the most famous annual exhibitions the AGNSW presents is the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes.
The Archibald Prize – this award goes to the best portrait painted by any Australasian artist. The criteria requires to paint a distinguished person from the fields of art, letters, science or politics.
The Wynne Prize – this award is for the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or the best example of figure sculpture by Australian artists.
The Sulman Prize – this award goes to the best subject painting, genre painting or mural project by an Australian artist.
The Archibald Prize’s first winner was recorded in in 1921. People from all over the globe join Sydney locals in anticipation of the various Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes to be announced before opening, like the Packer’s Prize and Overall Winners.
